SUMMARY:
It’s not every day I get to talk about the ins and outs of language learning, burgers, advice on businesses and taxi rides in one sitting.
But that’s exactly what happened when I joined Flobo for a chat on Knew Amsterdam Radio. We went from how I stumbled into teaching Spanish to the adventure of starting my own business, and even the perks (and challenges) of living far from home.
Why You Might Want to Listen In
If you’re learning Spanish, curious about the business side of a language school, or simply want a glimpse into what it’s really like to teach and live across cultures, this one’s for you. It was one of those interviews where I could really let my guard down—Flobo has a knack for making it all feel like you’re chatting with an old friend.
Learning Spanish as an Adult
We dove into the joys and fears of learning a new language as an adult. Let’s face it, the thought of learning Spanish can be a bit daunting, especially if you’re worried about feeling “too old” or thinking you’ll look silly. In the interview, I shared how I help students get over this hurdle, creating a space where they feel safe to make mistakes, try things out, and gain the confidence to actually use Spanish in their lives.
The “Why” Behind Fluency Lab
Flobo asked me what drives Fluency Lab, and I went deep into the personal side. Yes, it’s a business, but it’s also my way of making an impact and connecting with people on a human level. Language is personal—it’s about breaking down barriers and building connections. And each day, I get to see students use Spanish to further their careers, connect with others, and even help in their communities. This is what makes it all worth it.
Running a Business Abroad
We also touched on the reality of living far from home while running a business. It’s not all sunny days and smooth sailing! From marketing to operations to handling unexpected challenges, every day is different. And yes, sometimes it’s tough, but the freedom to work with people from all over the world keeps me going. Plus, you’ll get a peek at how I manage my day-to-day, from connecting with students in Australia to finding time to unwind by the beach.
